Moving In

You start with an empty house....

And end up with boxes everywhere....

And slowly, things start to fall into place....

As you come in the front door, you see the dining room to your right.

And to your left, the office

Then you walk back to the family room

And the kitchen with the breakfast nook

Behind the garage is the guest suite

Upstairs, we have the master bedroom, several other bedrooms, closets, and the laundry room.

Moving Out

Ah.... the thrill and stress of moving! First, you try to make your house look perfect.... then you deconstruct it and stack boxes everywhere! Good-bye townhouse.....

Here is the boring story of selling and buying and moving.... for posterity......

We sold our townhouse and bought a new house! It happened very quickly.... we didn't have any showings over the holidays, and then someone wanted to see the house the same night we were doing the Lion King extravaganza. I freaked out, and told them they couldn't come. Luckily for me, we had a showing the next day, and then that next week, and then we got an offer! We negotiated the offer, while also looking at the up-to-date real estate listings online. Once the deal was officially signed, we went out to our top two neighborhoods with our realtor. One house stood out from the rest, but we decided to think it over. The house we loved was located conveniently to the freeway, shops and Tim's work. It had a great layout and a fantastic kitchen. Because it was a spec home, the price was right, and ultimately it just couldn't compare with some existing homes. So we put in an offer the next day, which was accepted. The next week we worked on the mortgage papers. The week after that our townhouse was inspected, and we inspected the new house. The week after that we walked through the new house with the builder, the mortgage was finalized with insurance, the utilities set up for the new house, and we completed most of the items on the townhouse inspection list. Then we finished packing up the townhouse. We had a final walk-through on the new house. The funny part was a new realtor came with us because our realtor was at a conference. The new realtor kept saying how beautiful the house was, and how great the kitchen was. It was funny, because you expect realtor's to be jaded and bored with looking at houses :) Then we went to sign the papers on the new house, and borrowed the minivan to move a few things over. The movers arrived to sprinkling rain, and quickly loaded up the townhouse. Thank goodness the rain ended. While the movers unloaded our boxes and furniture, the appliances arrived, and the internet and tv service was set up. It really could not have been coordinated any better. Then we unpacked and settled in. I love the house and the location. I love being close enough that my sister and parents can drop by for a quick visit.

Just another manic monday

You think your day is going to be like this....

It is a gorgeously sunny day, about 75 degrees in beautiful North Carolina. You wake up, get to work on your to-do list, and have your afternoon arranged so that you can be out of the house when the appraiser comes, but still get to class.

Then this happens....

And just when you think your day will end up like this.....

A stranger helps you put on the spare tire and a friend drives you to school.

Valentine's Day

When I was growing up, my dad would buy my mom a big box of chocolates, and all of us kids a smaller box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. It was just one way we knew we were loved.

So whether you celebrate with chocolate or not, I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

The Middle of February

I have a friend who blogs all of her successes, and then, the blog world jinxes her, and things tend to go awry. So I am a bit reluctant to blog about anything more current than two weeks ago. Suffice it to say that I have done enough school things to take Friday afternoon off and catch up on my blogging, which is why you now have a bunch of posts to read from me.

One of the things I did in January was work at the Business School. I had all of these funny thoughts about my experience there, but then I forgot to write them down. But it did keep me busy enough to not blog during January.

I will probably disappear for the rest of February to take care of house things. So I will see you all in March, and hopefully the Ides of the Blog World will not come and get me!

Krispy Kreme Challenge

Two years ago a friend of mine invited me to do the Krispy Kreme Challenge. I hadn't trained at all, so I basically walked the two miles down to Krispy Kreme, ate a donut, and walked two miles back. It was a beautiful day, not too cold, and it was fun to see all of the crazy costumes people wore to race in. Last year I was in St. Louis for work, and missed the Krispy Kreme Challenge. Since my goal this year is to be a bit more physically active, I convinced my mom and a bunch of friends to sign up for the Krispy Kreme Challenge. Little did we know it would be rainy, cold and miserable. This, combined with the 7000 other people there, made it hard to meet up with everyone. I was glad my mom and I got dropped off together, and that she ran slower so we could stay together. Despite all of that, I am glad I ran. It is nice to have a goal and meet it. But I am not signing up for another race until the weather gets warmer!

Haircut

In my grief class we had to write a list of losses, not just ones related to death. One of the losses I wrote about was getting a haircut. I remember crying over bad haircuts, and leaving the salon only to pull my hair into a pony tail for the next three months. Sometimes it wasn't long enough to pull into a pony tail, which was even more tragic. Usually I approach a haircut as a way to magically transform myself into something like this:

But now I know what Reality Therapy is, and the reality is, I don't have perfectly curly hair. Nor do I have perfectly straight hair. The reality also is that I don't want to spend a half hour drying my hair, or flat ironing it. I want to be able to spend time at the gym, and as little time in the gym locker room as possible. Or I need to be able to bolt out of the door for a job. So with this criteria in mind, I set up a hair cut appointment.

Before the haircut, my hair looked like this:

I took in two pictures that represented wavy hair, that I felt were closer to the reality of my hair, and explained to the hair stylist that I wanted a 5 minute hairstyle.

I figured maybe a few layers and some styling cream, and I could pull out the waves in my hair like Anne Hathaway. What I missed was the reality of length.... since my new haircut feels alot shorter to me than either of those pictures conveyed :)

The reality is that my hair will grow back. Maybe if I am lucky, while it is growing out, it will become magically straight.... or beautifully curly :)

Lion King

Tim and I's christmas present to my family came in two parts....

We prepared an Iron-Chef-like meal at our house!

The Chairman: Please explain your inspiration for this challenge.
Chefs: We wanted to make food that my sister could eat that would also appeal to the rest of the family.
The Chairman hand gestures to the first course.
Chefs: What we have here is a green leaf salad with bing cherries.

The Chairman: Thank you, next course please.
The hand gesture.
Chefs: For our second course, we made lamb shanks with white beans. We went light on the lamb in the stew, and focused on the vegetable aspects of it.

The Chairman: Next course please.
The hand gesture.
Chefs: Our third course is lamb with a minted pea puree.

Chefs: For our final course, we have chocolate cinnamon mousse with a mixed cherry syrup.

And then we went to the Lion King at the DPAC!

The show was spectacular! My sisters said they wanted to be the dancing grass :)
